Performance of Rutile Titanium Dioxide Pigment in Water-Based Coatings

Rutile titanium white powderis one of the important white pigments, widely used in coatings, plastics, papermaking, inks, synthetic fibers, and other fields. Among them, the amount used in coatings is relatively large, accounting for about 60% of the total production of titanium white powder. Due to the late development of the titanium white powder industry in our country, the variety of products is single, mostly general-purpose products. The testing standards generally adopt the national standard GB/T1706-2005. The main focus is on physical and chemical indicators and pigment performance indicators, while downstream application manufacturers pay more attention to application indicators. In general fields, pigment performance can partially characterize the application of the product, but in special or high-end fields, the existing factory testing system for rutile titanium white powder cannot fully meet the requirements of downstream users. Mastering the relationship between the performance indicators of titanium white powder and its application performance can help technical marketing on one hand, and on the other hand, it can facilitate quality improvement and other technical work based on feedback from product applications.
First, by improving the existing water-based coating formula, the influence of fillers such as barium sulfate and heavy calcium was removed, allowing the formula to objectively reflect the impact of rutile titanium white powder on coating performance; by analyzing the application performance of rutile titanium white powder with different pigment properties in water-based coatings, the corresponding relationship between the performance indicators of rutile titanium white powder and its application performance was found.
Main raw materials and equipment: Rutile titanium white powder, industrial grade, modified styrene-acrylic emulsion, wetting dispersant, substrate wetting agent, leveling agent, thickener, and other additives.
1. Testing methods
(1) Whiteness test: According to GB/T6749-1997 "Method for Representing the Color of Paint Films", the color of the paint film is represented by the L*, a*, and b* coordinate system, where L* represents lightness, a* represents the red-green axis, and b* represents the yellow-blue axis.
(2) Fineness: According to GB/T6753.1-2007 "Determination of Grinding Fineness of Coatings, Varnishes, and Inks", measured using a scraper fineness gauge.
(3) Hiding power: A small amount of paint is applied to a clean, flat polyester film, quickly leveled with a 100-micron thick wet grind, and naturally dried for 48 hours. The color values of the polyester film on the blackboard and whiteboard are read using a colorimeter to obtain the hiding power value. The higher the hiding power value, the better the hiding power.
